As a Vietnamese American artist with a background in textile design, my work is deeply rooted in the exploration of identity and cultural heritage. Growing up under the weight of traditional gender roles and familial duties, I found solace and resistance in the act of creating art. My practice centers on themes of textiles, patterns, and the abstraction of personal and collective tragedies.
Through my art, I seek to reconcile the tension between tradition and individuality, using universal motifs to connect with a broader audience. My pieces are characterized by their rich textures, repetitive patterns, and the intricate layering of meaning, reflecting my journey of self-discovery and rebellion against societal norms. My background in textile design informs my approach, allowing me to create works that are not only visually compelling but also deeply tactile and immersive.
StatementMy work delves into the intricate interplay of textiles and patterns, weaving together the threads of family obligation, tradition, and identity. As a Vietnamese American woman, I navigate the complexities of cultural expectations and the pressures of fulfilling traditional gender roles. For me, creating art is an act of rebellion—a way to challenge and transcend these confines.
Through textures and repetition, I explore the abstraction of tragedy, transforming personal and collective experiences into universal motifs. My art is a tapestry of stories, each piece a reflection of the intricate layers that form our identities. By embracing the patterns on patterns, I aim to honor tradition while simultaneously questioning and redefining it.
