The idea for this piece developed after discovering a stash of black and white cardboard rectangles. The rectangles were negative pieces from some product display packaging. I used the holes in the packaging to stencil the rectangular pattern in the sky. I was also inspired by a sunrise photo I took at the beach, the Pop Art movement, and Mid-Century Modern designs. To help me see all my inspiration in one place I made a mood board of colors, patterns, and photos before I sketched my ideas out. While this idea mainly developed from the materials and inspirational images, there is a deeper meaning. For me, a sunrise is symbolic of the good things that come after a challenge or difficult period of time. The darkness does not last.
